Australia now has over one million households with solar power systems according to data from the Clean Energy Regulator released earlier this month. The figure was reached in March and means and is very positive news for the Renewable Energy Target.
There are also nearly 800,000 solar hot water and air source heat pump systems in Australian homes, helping reduce electricity usage and slash power bills.
According to the Clean Energy Council, our country is now saving a massive half a billion dollars a year on electricity bills. Great news for both consumers and the environment.
The growth in solar system installations lately has been nothing short of incredible. In 2008, only around 20,000 systems were installed in all of Australia, and now 2.5 million Australians live in a house with solar panels on their roof.
“People from all walks of life have been installing solar as a way of protecting themselves from power price pain over the long term,” said David Green, Chief Executive of the CEC.
The Renewable Energy Target aims to ensure that by 2020, at least 20 percent of Australia’s electricity comes from renewable sources. And with schemes that give homeowners a financial incentive to switch to solar, along with the increased desire for people to protect the environment, we are confident this goal will be reached.
