Making the switch to energy efficient hot water is a smart move, both environmentally and economically. A solar system can save you up to 80% on your water heating bills, and drastically reduce your carbon emissions.
Heat pumps are an innovative new technology that is environmentally friendly but doesn’t even need the sun! The system extracts heat energy from the air and uses it to heat water. If your old electric water heater needs replacing, it can be a quick, easy and effective option.
When deciding if a heat pump is right for you, you should consider the following important factors:
Do you have access to gas?
If you DON’T have access to gas then a heat pump is a great option for an electric-powered water heater that is efficient to run. If you DO have access to gas, then you should also compare the value in installing an efficient gas water heater, or gas-boosted solar water heater, due to the lower running costs of these systems.
What type of climate do you live in?
Heat pumps work more efficiently in warm, humid climates. If you happen to live in an area where a heat pump could be subjected to freezing conditions, then it may not be for you. Heat pump systems will not work as efficiently, as the internal electric element activates at low temperatures. Therefore if you live in extremely cold environments, you should consider an electric-boosted solar hot water system with frost protection or evacuated tube collectors.
Is your roof suitable for a solar panels?
Your roof may not be strong enough or of the right material to hold solar panels. Furthermore, you may not want collectors on your roof for aesthetic reasons. If either of these are the case, then a heat pump may be the best water heater option for you. If your roof IS strong enough, then you should consider going solar. Solar hot water systems will provide even greater energy savings over the long term.
