In 2014, there were nearly 170,000 solar power systems installed across Australia, with 36,000 new systems in Victoria alone. And with energy prices continuing to rise, the economic benefits of switching to solar are becoming more appealing by the day.

After installing solar energy, home owners are finding their power bills drop by more than two-thirds, and their power becomes immune from blackouts. Plus there are lots more advantages of solar power.

Many Victorians, including Croydon resident Ian Wilson see their solar purchase as a retirement investment. At age 58, it will reduce Ian’s everyday expenses as well as having a positive impact on the environment.

“We have used almost no peak hour energy at all since getting batteries … we did have a power outage in the area and sailed through it,

[it was an] automatic switch over,” he said.

Industry experts have suggested that if uptake of solar in Victoria continues at the same rate, 20 per cent of homes will have solar panels by 2016 and 50% by 2030.
